Most of us have heard that God is Sovereign; yet we struggle with belief. A trial may crop up and then we fret, stew and sometimes even panic over what we determine are things going all the wrong way! We ask, ‘Where are you God? Why is this happening?” We finally throw up our hands and say, “Lord I can’t deal with this, you have to do something!” And then we fret again because waiting is hard! So in essence, even when we cry out to him, we aren’t really certain he’s going to do anything and maybe we aren’t even sure he can!
Our own perspectives of what God can and will do, depends on our faith walk. His Word totally tells us God hears! It also assures us he is in control and wants only what is best for us; and further, he knows what is best for us. But with that said, even steadfast Believers can question if they are in God’s will when things go awry and a cloud has seemed to settle in where sunshine had been.
Recently my husband and I were watching God work. It’s was amazing! It seemed everything was moving beyond even our expectations, and then the cloud settled in. For weeks we stressed over ‘what next’? How long will this darkness continue? How do we respond?
With complete frustration, we decided to just put everything on hold. Walk away from ‘it’ for a bit and come back to it later. I felt strongly we were still in God’s will, even though, it’d been a while since we’d had anything positive go right. I’m not sure where my husband was on the matter, but he was beyond frustration.
Then out of the blue, God showed up! He not only showed up, but provided nothing less than a miracle and it came, quite unexpectedly, through a conversation my husband had with someone else! Problem solved! I was overwhelmed.
It just proves again, God is in control. He is Sovereign and when the time is right, he’ll take care of whatever issue we have, when we ‘let go—-and let God!’
But how do we do that when things really go askew of what we thought God wants? That’s a hard question. The Bible tells us we are to be ‘slaves to Christ.’ Our culture is adamant with negativity about slavery. Yet spiritually we are all slaves. We are slaves to Christ or we are slaves to ‘the evil one.’ —- satan and this world. Sadly with satan and his minions gaining more --and a firmer foothold in our modern world, our world doesn’t see life in a spiritual way. So accepting this idea is difficult.
With everything around us screaming ‘do your own thing’—- ‘do everything and/or anything you feel good doing’— it’s hard to filter out the noise! Add to this, feeling like a dark, damp cloud is settling in so intently you feel like you're smothering—or drowning in darkness. It’s easy to give up, even when you believe you’re in God’s will. A person begins thinking they’ve read it all wrong, they actually misunderstood what God wanted, and walk away from the trial they’re going through.
The truth is however, that the very trial God is allowing us to endure, could be his way of testing us to see if we are even ready for, fulfilling what this ‘next season’ has in store!
Of course, I can’t possibly know what God thinks, but it’s a great way to think about it, especially when all of a sudden He show up and puts everything right back on track!
As Believers, we serve (as slaves,) an amazing God. Watching him work is inspiring, breathtaking and sometimes even overwhelming. What a gift he gives, when we allow him to work in and through us, and let God be God!
